Last summer Sony teased us with a personal air conditioner to battle the less pleasant effects of the sun. The release was scheduled to coincide with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but as we know the event was cancelled due to Covid-19. Nevertheless Sony has kept its promise and the handy device is now available to make life bit less hot.

Sony Reon Pocket

Coined the Sony Reon Pocket the air conditionerd kind of resembles Apple’s Magic Mouse. It’s used in combination with a special undershirt with a dedicated pocket at the base of the neck. When slipped into the pocket the tiny air conditioner rests against the wearers back and uses the Peltier effect to get cooling.

According to Sony the Reon Pocket should be able to cool your body temperature by as much as 13 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit) on a hot summer day. Of course there’s an accompanying app to tell the device exactly how cool you like it. Adjust the temperature manually or choose the automatic mode to have the Reon monitor your temperature and movements in order to maintain your desired level of coolness.

Air conditioner and heater

The Reon Pocket isn’t only for the summer though. The device can also be used on a cold winter day to keep you nice and warm. It should be able to raise your temperature by some 8 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit).

Keep in mind though that it’s a small device that doesn’t have room for a massive battery. Practically that means the thing can cool or heat you from about 2 to 4 hours. After that it takes 2 hours to get it fully charged again.

Another thing is that you might have to wait for a bit to get your hands on the personal air conditioner/heater. At the moment the Reon Pocket is available on different Japanese sites, including Sony’s Japanese website and Amazon Japan.

Another wearable device that helps you out during hot days is Seymoupowell’s smart collar. It helps cool you down and even delivers beauty treatments on the go.
