Lately many of us have been paying extra attention to personal hygiene and have been cleaning a bit more than usual. One item we however tend to forget is our smartphone. Well Samsung has just the solution for that: the ITFIT UV Sterilizer that also happens to charge your device.
Kill 99 percent of germs and bacteria
The company announced the UV Sterilizer on Samsung Thailand last week and has now dedicated a Newsroom page to the device on its global website. According to the announcement the new sterilizer should effectively be able to kill up to 99 percent of bacteria and germs lingering on your phone.
The device sports a sleek and minimal design that leaves a lot of room to glam it up. Once you drop in your phone the box starts sanitizing with the press of a button. The UV function works on the top and bottom of your device and automatically shuts off after 10 minutes. And as an added bonus there’s a built in wireless charger, so you’re phone will emerge clean and charged.

As Samsung’s UV Sterilizer is reasonably big (196 x 96 x 33 mm), most phones should fit inside. And of course you could also use it to clean other items, such as your earphones or glasses.
Effective against coronavirus?
You might wonder if it will also be effective against the novel coronavirus. Unfortunately there are no guarantees here. CNET notes that there aren’t enough published peer-reviewed studies at the moment on the effect of UV-light on this specific coronavirus. The light could “probably” kill the virus however according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. They base this assumption on the fact that UV-light is effective in destroying other coronaviruses.

So where can you get Samsung’s UV Sterilizer? At the moment there doesn’t seem to be a page for the device on Samsung’s US website. Pages have popped up though on the German, Dutch, and Hong Kong sites. On the Dutch site it’s being sold for 59.99 euro, which is about 68 USD.
Samsung Galaxy Sanitizing Service
On the other hand you could also just let Samsung do the work for you. According to SamMobile the company has launched a Galaxy Sanitizing Service that will clean your phone, Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Buds. It should be available in 19 markets, including the United States, Malaysia, Argentina, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Japan, and Denmark.
