When it comes to IKEA’s smart home devices, the company seems like cleverly hidden solutions. We’ve seen smart speakers hidden in a lamp, a shelf and even a picture frame. Now the company seems to be moving on to furniture. This October we can expect the IKEA STARKVIND smart air purifier. And for the furniture part: it’s hidden in a side table.
The air purifier has a circular design and is developed to optimize the air in rooms up to 20 square meters. It uses a 3-filter system with a pre-filter to capture the bigger particles, such as hair and dust. Then there’s a second filter to tackle about 99.5 percent of smaller airborne particles. A third filter takes care of gasses and absorbs various pollutants like formaldehyde. It also reduces unwanted smells from for example smoking and cooking.

Connected air purifier
Obviously the STARKVIND air purifier can be used on its own, but when connected to the TRÅDFRI hub it becomes part of your smart ecosystem. It’s possible to control the thing through the IKEA Home app, so you don’t have to get up to select one of the five different fan speeds. You could also go for the auto mode in which the device adjusts the fan speed according to the pollution level of the air in the room. Thanks to the built in sensor you can also check the quality of the air in the app.
“For IKEA, the smart home is not about gadgets. It’s about making life and home better through combining our solid home furnishing knowledge with digital solutions and technology.” says Henrik Telander, Product Owner at IKEA of Sweden. “That’s why we explore the possibility of integrating the function of purifying air and technology to provide good experience for customers at home.”

IKEA STARKVIND standalone or table
Although IKEA likes putting smart devices into other objects, the air purifier is also available as a standalone version. The standalone version will be available in black and white for 129 USD, while you’ll be able to get the table version in a dark or light wood finish for 189 USD.
