Meet Gemio: the connected friendship bracelet

Share this Glamtech:

A long time ago on the same earth friendship bracelets were all the rage. Often handmade and given by one person to another as a sign of friendship. But nowadays everything seems to have the need to be connected and it was only a matter of time before the good old friendship bracelet got an update. That’s where Gemio comes in: the connected modern day friendship bracelet.

Gemio smart band

The Gemio friendship bracelet is in fact a smart band and started off as a Kickstarter project. Meanwhile we’ve arrived at the Gemio Smart Band 2, which you can give some extra pazazz by adding different tile sets to change its appearance. It’s even possible to create your own custom tile set to really make it your own.

Eight different light effects

Apart from the tile sets the smart band is also outfitted with a 20 RGB LED array to really make things interesting. By default the bracelet ships with 8 different light effects: Sun, Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, Music, Meteor and Galaxy. Each effect responds differently to sounds or music, shaking and the rotation of the band. For example, the included microphone enables the color and pattern on the band to change to the beat of the music surrounding you. And when you shake the thing you’ll activate a ravishing fire effect.

Connect to your friends

And yes sure a light emitting bracelet is nice, but what makes it more engaging is the connectivity. If your friends also have a Gemini you can connect your bracelets and the bangle will let you know when a connected friend is nearby. And then there’s the Gemio app with its DJ Control feature to DJ the hell out of your friends’ bracelets. The app can incidentally also be used to check on which of your friends are nearby and to send them coded light signals.

The Gemio Band 2 is available through the Gemio website for 39.00 USD and tile sets can be bought for 9.99 USD. The Band 2 comes with USB charging, but if you’re all about wireless there’s also a Gemio Band 1 with wireless charging. Of course you’ll need the special wireless charger (19 USD) for that to work.

Another piece of jewelry that’s connected is the Motive Ring. It doesn’t really connect to your friends, but it does tell you all about your fitness stats.
